Round 1: Start by crocheting 4 single crochet (sc) stitches into a magic ring. (Using a loop, crochet 4 single crochet inside the loop, then draw it closed using the other end of the loop.)
Round 2: Crochet 3 sc into the next stitch, and repeat until the end of the round (12 stitches). [Keep the tension loose and remember that each 3 sc into the stitch should be at the corner of the square.]
Round 3: Crochet 1 sc, then 3 sc into the next stitch, followed by 2 sc. Repeat until the end of the round (20 stitches). [you will stitch to connect each last stitch to the first stitch in the middle of the round, and the final stitches in that row will add to the first crochet to finish off the same number of stitches as on all three other sides. In this case it may be 2 prior to connecting the first to the last stitches, but use your discretion if it doesn’t look right to you.]
Round 4: Crochet 2 sc, then 3 sc into the next stitch, followed by 4 sc. Repeat (28 stitches).
Round 5: Crochet 3 sc, then 3 sc into the next stitch, followed by 6 sc. Repeat (36 stitches).
Round 6: Crochet 4 sc, then 3 sc into the next stitch, followed by 8 sc (44 stitches).
Continue until desired size is reached, then finish off and block the square.
