Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Butter a 9 by 13-inch baking dish. (you can also use non-stick spray)
Evenly spread the cake mix into the baking dish. Use a fork or offset spatula to help spread evenly.
Sprinkle the chocolate pudding, into an even layer on top of the cake mix.
Sprinkle half the chocolate chips on top of the dry mixture.
Using a fork, lightly mix the dry mixture and chocolate chips to coat the chocolate chips.
Pour the milk over the dry mixture, and mix with a fork until the milk and dry mixture are almost incorporated.
Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips on top.
Place the sliced butter on top of the cake.
Bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes or until the edges are set and the top is golden.
