In a pot, combine the tomatoes, yellow onion, butter, and salt. If using unsalted butter, add an additional teaspoon of kosher salt.
Set the pot over medium-low to low heat and cook uncovered for 1-1.5 hours until the tomatoes and onions fall apart when poked with a spoon.
Use an immersion blender to blend the tomatoes and onions until smooth.
Serve the sauce over spaghetti or your preferred pasta.
