In a bowl, sift together the flour, salt, and sugar.
Add the butter and rub it in using your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
Gradually mix in most of the milk, adjusting the amount until the dough comes together without being too wet.
Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently with your hands.
Shape the dough and place it on a lined baking tray.
If desired, brush the top with a beaten egg and sprinkle some sugar over it.
Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (fan) for about 20 minutes, or until the scones are golden on top and fully baked.
