Bring water, brown sugar, fresh cranberries, fresh orange juice, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and orange zest to a boil
Allow cranberries to burst on their own or use a muddler or potato masher to speed up the process
Once sugar is dissolved and most berries have been juiced, strain the syrup
Store spiced cranberry syrup in a sealed tight container and refrigerate for up to one month
For batched palomas, stir together grapefruit juice, cranberry juice, lime juice, tequila, and spiced cranberry syrup
Serve and enjoy
Optional: top with squirt or grapefruit soda
Garnish with cranberries, orange slices, and star anise
