If you're making tofu wings using an oven, preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. If you're making air fryer tofu wings, preheat the air fryer to 390 °F (or adjust for your specific model).
Now prepare your tofu! If you desire a firm consistency, drain the block of extra firm tofu and wrap it in a clean kitchen towel. Place something heavy on top, like a cutting board or a few books, and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to press out any excess liquid. This step is optional tho, especially if you want to make these vegan wings as fast as possible.
In the meantime, prepare the dry mixture. In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, and salt. Mix well.
In a separate bowl prepare the wet mixture. Combine the unsweetened non-dairy milk, apple cider vinegar, vegan sauce (ex. Buffalo sauce or barbecue sauce), and flour. Whisk until smooth.
In a third shallow bowl, add breadcrumbs.
Once the tofu is pressed (most of the water is drained out), cut it into bite-sized cubes or thick strips like wing shapes.
Take each tofu wing and coat it in your dry mixture. Then dip it into the wet mixture, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat it in the breadcrumbs and lightly press with your fingers to seal the breadcrumbs. Repeat this process until all the tofu pieces are coated.
Place the coated tofu wings on the prepared baking sheet (skip if using air fryer), making sure they are not touching each other. If desired, you can lightly spray or brush them with oil for added crispiness.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-18 minutes, or until the tofu is crispy and golden brown. Flip the tofu halfway through the cooking time to ensure even browning. If using air fryer, place the coated tofu wings in the air fryer basket and cook for about 10-12 minutes. Flip them halfway through for even cooking.
While the tofu wings are baking, warm the vegan sauce (Buffalo or Barbecue sauce) in a small saucepan over low heat, if desired.
Once the wings are done, remove it from the oven/air fryer and transfer the crispy tofu wings to a large mixing bowl.
Pour your warm sauce, highly recommend Frank's Red Hot Sauce or barbecue sauce over the tofu, and toss gently until all the pieces are coated. You can also serve the tofu wings with the sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy!
