Preheat the oven to 175C, then grease and line a standard loaf tin with baking paper.
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
In a larger bowl, combine the softened butter with the brown and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
Add the eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each, then mix in the vanilla extract and buttermilk.
Fold the chopped apples, and then transfer the mixture to the prepared loaf pan.
Cook for 55 minutes, up to one hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool in the tin before moving to a wire rack and leaving to cool completely.
