Prepare the tofu: Press the tofu to remove excess water, then slice it into slabs.
Pan-fry the tofu: Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the tofu slabs and cook until golden brown on each side (about 4-5 minutes per side). Remove from the pan and set aside.
Make the sauce: In the same pan, add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds. Then, add the tomato sauce, balsamic vinegar, dried basil/oregano, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Simmer the sauce for 5-7 minutes until it thickens slightly.
Combine: Place the tofu back into the pan, spooning the balsamic tomato sauce over each piece to coat. Let it simmer together for another 5 minutes to absorb the flavors.
Serve: Garnish with fresh basil if desired and serve over rice, pasta, or with a side of veggies.
