  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Butter and line a round cake pan with parchment paper.

  2. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy.

  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until smooth.

  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt.

  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Stir in the vanilla extract. Mix just until smooth and silky.

  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and gently smooth the top.

  7. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until lightly golden and set in the center with a slight jiggle.

  8. Let the cake cool completely before dusting with powdered sugar. Slice and serve.
