Add the sweetener and pepper to the water. Stir and set aside.
Heat a large skillet on medium to medium-high heat and add the bacon. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes until just crisp. Add the onion and cook an additional 4 to 5 minutes, until the onion is translucent and soft.
Add the beans and liquid to the skillet and stir. Heat to boiling, then reduce heat and simmer. Cook for about 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The liquid will reduce as the beans cook.
When the beans are tender, turn off the heat and stir again to distribute the liquid. Transfer the beans to a serving dish and spoon the remaining liquid over the top to maximize the flavor.
