Preheat oven to 200ºC (400°F).
Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt
'Cut' or 'Rub' the butter into the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. You can do this by hand or in a food processor.
Whisk the buttermilk and egg together.
Combine the buttermilk and flour mixtures in a big bowl.
Stir the dough together until it is too stiff to stir.
Tun the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
Knead the dough for about 2-3 minutes; if the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.
Transfer the dough to a greased loaf pan.
Score the top.
Bake until golden brown and a cake tester comes out clean, about 45 minutes.
