Soutzoukakia (greek Meatballs)

For the meatballs:

    For the sauce:

  1. Break bread slices into breadcrumbs using a food processor.

  2. In a bowl, combine breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, cumin, and parsley.

  3. Add red wine, milk, and olive oil to the breadcrumb mixture.

  4. Mix in ground beef, ground pork, and beaten egg until homogeneous.

  5. Form 12 oblong-shaped meatballs and lightly flour them.

  6. Fry meatballs in oil until golden, then drain on paper towels.

  7. For the sauce, sauté onion and salt in olive oil for 3-4 minutes.

  8. Add garlic, tomato paste, pepper, cumin, and sugar, sauté for 1 minute.

  9. Add tomatoes, beef stock, cinnamon stick, and bay leaf.

  10. Add fried meatballs to the sauce, cover, and simmer for 12-15 minutes.

  11. Serve with rice or mashed potatoes, garnished with fresh parsley.
