  1. Mix the thinly sliced onions with buttermilk, salt, sugar, MSG, onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes.

  2. Add more salt.

  3. Heat oil in a pot to around 375°F.

  4. Toss the onions in the all-purpose flour, making sure to get close to the oil when adding them to avoid splatter.

  5. Fry the onions in batches until golden brown.

  6. Drain the fried onions and immediately sprinkle with salt.

  7. Use the leftover buttermilk marinade to make a dipping sauce by adding mayonnaise and sour cream.
