Boil the cubed potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and set aside.
In a separate pan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Add the shredded cabbage to the pan and cook until wilted and tender, about 8-10 minutes
Mash the cooked potatoes with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and milk until smooth and creamy.
Stir in the cooked cabbage and onion mixture into the mashed potatoes.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve hot, garnished with chopped fresh chives.
