from: American Heritage Cookbook 1964. original recipe is called "SAND TARTS" and cookies are brushed with milk and sprinkled with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.

Sift together flour, salt and baking powder.
Cream butter and vanilla until soft.
Then add sugar a little at a time.
Work the mixture until light and fluffy.
Add unbeaten egg and extra egg yolk, beating well.
OPTIONAL: Add orange or lemon peel.
Mix in the flour mixture and beat hard.
Chill dough in refrigerator or several hours or overnight.
Divide dough into portions; roll out one portion at a time on pastry cloth or floured board until thin.
[ If dough becomes too soft to handle return to refrigerator and chill. ]
Cut with cookie cutter, place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Brush tops with milk, sprinkle with natural coarse sugar.
Bake in 350° oven for 8-10 minutes or until edges of cookies turn a delicate brown.
