Peel the potatoes and cut them into quarters
In a large pot, bring heavily salted water to a boil on medium heat. Add the potatoes and let simmer for about 20 minutes, until a knife can easily be inserted into them.
Drain the potatoes, put them in a large bowl, and let them steam. Then use a potato masher to mash them until there are small chunks of potato.
Add the milk, cream, and butter to the bowl and fold into the mixture until the mashed potatoes are still coarse but creamy and fluffy. Season with salt, pepper, and a hearty pinch of grated nutmeg.
