Directions
In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it’s foamy and bubbly.
Stir in the salt, oil, and half of the flour (about 3 cups) into the yeast mixture. Mix until smooth. Then, add the remaining flour, one cup at a time, until the dough comes together.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead for about 7-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, for about an hour.
Punch down the dough, divide it in half, shape each half into a loaf, and place in greased loaf pans. Let them rise again until about an inch above the pans, about 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaves for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
Let the bread cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before turning them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Note 1: Swap the oil - Use melted butter for a richer flavor to coconut oil for a hint of tropical sweetness.
Note 2: Mix-Ins - Fold some raisins and cinnamon for a sweet loaf or a mix of seeds for a heartier, textured bread.
