Season short ribs with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic powder.
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and sear ribs on all sides until browned.
Place sliced onions and garlic in the slow cooker.
Add beef broth, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar. Stir well.
Place ribs into the slow cooker and spoon sauce over the top.
Cover and cook on LOW for 7–8 hours or HIGH for 4–5 hours until tender.
Garnish with fresh thyme and serve with mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables.
