Brenda Gantt Biscuits
  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Take a cast iron skillet and grease the inside surface by putting some Crisco all over.

  2. In a large bowl, add self-rising flour and salt. Create a middle hole in the flour.

  3. Pour the buttermilk into the flour hole. Add Crisco shortening.

  4. Squeeze the buttermilk and Crisco together with your hands and keep mixing with the flour until everything comes together.

  5. Spread some flour onto a clean surface and put the dough on it. Press the dough with the palm of your hands and very gently pat out to 1-inch thickness. Cut out about 8 biscuits with a biscuit cutter.

  6. Place each piece of dough in the prepared cast iron skillet.

  7. Put the cast iron skillet in the middle rack of the oven. Bake for about 10-15 minutes or until the tops turn golden.

  8. Serve immediately with butter, honey, or jam.
