Start by gathering all the ingredients needed for the sauce.
In a medium saucepan, combine the tomatoes, onion, butter, and salt.
Cook the mixture over medium-low heat, uncovered. Stir occasionally and use the back of a wooden spoon to mash any large tomato pieces.
Continue cooking until the fat separates from the tomatoes and blends into the sauce, which should take about 1 hour to 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Taste the sauce and add more salt if needed.
Once done, remove the onion halves and discard them.
