Heat large sauté pan over medium-high heat and coat with olive oil.
Add onion and garlic and cook until they begin to soften, about 4 minutes.
Add ground sausage, kosher salt, black pepper, oregano, and pepper flakes, cooking for 6 to 8 minutes.
Add tomatoes and chickpeas, bring to a boil, then lower heat to a simmer.
Simmer for 10 to 25 minutes, adding water if the mixture looks too thick.
Add kale and cook until wilted, about 2 to 3 minutes.
Preheat oven's broiler. If pan isn't ovenproof, transfer mixture to a baking dish.
Scatter cheeses on top and broil until melted and browned.
Serve immediately.
