Preheat oven to 180°C fan
Melt the butter and set aside to cool
Combine all apple filling ingredients in a medium saucepan and cook over medium heat for approximately 10 minutes until apples are slightly softened
Transfer cooked apples into a baking dish and allow to cool
Combine all dry topping ingredients in a bowl
Add melted butter and vanilla to the dry ingredients and stir
Add golden syrup to the mixture and mix until combined
Evenly spread the topping over the apples
Bake in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes until golden
Allow to cool; the topping will harden as it cools
Serve with custard or ice cream
