Combine the salt and water in a large pot and heat over medium-low heat.
Bring the mixture to a soft boil, stirring until all the salt dissolves and the water is clear.
Transfer the saltwater to a wide dish and add optional flavorings or colorants.
Leave the mixture to evaporate using one of four methods: air drying, dehydrator, oven, or stove-top.
Once dried, transfer the flakes to clean airtight jars for storage.
