In a large bowl mix the flour, salt and sugar, rub in the butter and then stir in the yeast.
Stir in the water and mix by hand to form a soft dough.
Knead for about 5 mins in an electric mixer (dough hook) or by hand for 10 mins.
Shape the dough then place in a greased 2lb tin or on a baking tray Cover with a clean, damp tea towel and leave in a warm place to double in size (1.5 - 2 hours).
Uncover and bake 230°C/gas 8 for 30-35 mins. Should sound hollow when tapped underneath. Cool on a rack.
