  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8x8-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk melted butter and sugar together until glossy and combined.

  3. Add in eggs and vanilla extract, whisking until fully incorporated.

  4. Sift in cocoa powder, flour, and salt. Gently fold until just combined—do not overmix.

  5. Fold in chocolate chips or chunks, if using.

  6. Pour batter into prepared pan, smoothing the top.

  7. Bake for 28–32 minutes until edges are set and a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.

  8. Cool completely in the pan, then lift out and cut into squares.
