Step 1: Prepare the Chicken - Start by placing the chicken breasts in the bottom of your slow cooker. You don’t need to sear them beforehand—although searing can add extra flavor if you have time.
Step 2: Add Seasoning - Sprinkle salt, black pepper, and ranch seasoning (if using) evenly over the chicken. The ranch mix enhances the flavor of the gravy, giving it a subtle herby taste.
Step 3: Pour in the Broth - Next, pour in the chicken broth. This liquid helps the chicken cook gently while infusing it with flavor. If you want a richer base, you can also add a can of cream of chicken soup at this stage.
Step 4: Slow Cook - Cover the crockpot with its lid and cook on low for 6–7 hours or on high for 3–4 hours. Cooking on low yields more tender chicken, but either option works depending on your schedule.
Step 5: Shred the Chicken - Once the chicken is fully cooked and fork-tender, remove it from the slow cooker and shred it with two forks. Return the shredded chicken to the crockpot and stir it into the gravy.
Step 6: Serve Hot - Spoon the chicken and gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Garnish with fresh parsley or black pepper if desired.
