Prepare the yeast:
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk with 1 tsp sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Mix the dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
Add eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, and citrus zest.
Pour in the activated yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough:
Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
Shape the bread:
Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts.
Roll each part into a long rope and braid them together.
If using colored eggs, gently press them into the braid.
Second rise:
Place the braided dough on a baking sheet, cover, and let it rise for 30-45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Brush the bread with an egg wash and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
Cool and serve:
Let the bread cool before slicing and serving.
