Easter Bread
  1. Prepare the yeast:

  2. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk with 1 tsp sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  3. Mix the dough:

  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.

  5. Add eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, and citrus zest.

  6. Pour in the activated yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.

  7. Knead the dough:

  8. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  9. First rise:

  10. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.

  11. Shape the bread:

  12. Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts.

  13. Roll each part into a long rope and braid them together.

  14. If using colored eggs, gently press them into the braid.

  15. Second rise:

  16. Place the braided dough on a baking sheet, cover, and let it rise for 30-45 minutes.

  17. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  18. Brush the bread with an egg wash and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

  19. Cool and serve:

  20. Let the bread cool before slicing and serving.
