How To Cook Rice
  1. Place the rice in a fine mesh sieve. Rinse under cold running water, gently swishing with your hands, until the water runs clear. Allow to drain thoroughly.

  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the rice and 1 ¾ cups water. Add the salt and oil or butter, if using.

  3. Bring the rice to a simmer over medium-low heat. Allow it to simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook until the rice is tender, 15 to 18 minutes. Remove from the heat.

  4. Allow the rice to sit, covered, for 10 minutes. This will allow the water to absorb and help ensure fluffy rice. Fluff with a fork before serving.
