Put lentils, onion, tomatoes, green chili, turmeric, hing, garam masala, and water in a pot
Boil for 15 minutes until the lentils are soft
Slightly mash the dal
Stir in salt to taste, lemon juice, and chopped cilantro or parsley
Heat oil in a separate pan for about 1 minute
Add minced garlic, hing, chili flakes, and cumin to the hot oil
Heat the tadka mixture for about 1 minute
Pour the tadka over the dal and serve
