In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast becomes foamy.
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil, stirring until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time.
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangular shape, about ½ inch thick, on a lightly floured surface.
Transfer the dough to a greased baking sheet or pizza stone. Use a pizza cutter or knife to slice the dough into strips.
Bake the breadsticks for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
While the breadsticks bake, combine the melted butter, garlic powder, parmesan cheese, and salt in a small bowl.
Once the breadsticks are out of the oven, immediately brush them with the garlic butter mixture. Serve warm and enjoy!
