In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
Add the egg, and using an electric mixer, or a pastry cutter, combine the butter with the flour mixture.
Carefully pour the buttermilk into the flour and butter mixture, then add in the raisins or currants. Mix on low to medium speed until combined. Dough will be a little sticky. Lightly flour a spatula or your hand to transfer it from the bowl.
Place dough on a lightly floured surface, and gently form into a round shape. Do not knead the dough or the crust can become hard, and try to shape the dough with the same height throughout, without a dome in the middle. Using a paring knife, lightly cut an X shape into the top of the dough.
Place the dough in a lightly sprayed or parchment paper lined air fryer basket.
Air fry at 350 degrees F for 10-15 minutes, until the bread is golden brown. Using a hot pad, turn the hot bread over and air fry at 350 degrees F for an additional 10 minutes.
