Preheat oven to 160°C fan forced.
If using dried dates, cut and soak in boiling water.
Pop the flour, brown sugar, milk, eggs and melted butter into a bowl and stir until just combined.
Sprinkle the (drained) chopped dates over the batter and stir carefully. Pour batter into a baking dish.
Add all sauce ingredients into a large jug, mix until combined and slowly pour over the back of a spoon onto the batter.
Bake for approximately 40 minutes until golden and bubbling.
Serve straight from the oven with cream or ice cream.
