Cut ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter into 8 tablespoons. Add 6 tablespoons to a small bowl to come to room temperature.
Separate 1 head of garlic into cloves, then flatten them with the side of a knife and peel.
Mince or finely grate 1 garlic clove and add to the bowl of softened butter. Finely chop the remaining garlic cloves.
Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of salted butter to a small pot or skillet over medium to medium-low heat to melt.
When the butter is melted, add the finely chopped garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until the garlic just starts to turn golden.
Transfer to a small bowl and let cool completely.
Add the cooled, toasted garlic to the bowl of butter. Use a fork to smash together. Optionally stir in finely chopped herbs or a pinch of ground black pepper or chile flakes.
